winter fishing bishop owens river

Located at the north end of the Owens Valley, with close access to some of the Sierra’s most dramatic high country, Bishop is a small town with a big backyard—and its blue-skied utopia if you’re looking for some of the finest fishing in the West during the winter months.
At this time of year you can fish for trout, bass and catfish at Diaz Lake and the Haiwee Reservoir, and the Owens River south of Bishop. The Owens from just below Bishop all the way north to Pleasant Valley Reservoir is a favorite wintertime destination for trout fishers—particularly the Wild Trout section just below Pleasant Valley Reservoir. And the Pleasant Valley Reservoir is open to shore fishing and float tubing all year-round.
Remember that fishing regulations are subject to change, so always check the fishing reports before you pack up your gear.
Here the lowdown on three of our favorite fishing spots…
1. Owens River & Pleasant Valley Reservoir
Trout anglers in the Eastern Sierra don’t hang up their rods at Owens River after November 15. Not only is the river a popular fishing spot during the winter months, b but there are lots of spots where the fishing can be incredible.
2. Diaz Lake
Located just a few miles south of Lone Pine, Diaz Lake is especially popular in the winter, when this roadside fishing hole is stocked with rainbows. It’s also not unusual for a heavyweight largemouth bass to make a showing. And as the lake is closed to motorized boats from October 30 to May 15, it’s a very peaceful spot.
3. Owens River Wild Trout Area
If you’re looking for wild brown trout, this section of the Owens River from Pleasant Valley Reservoir to Five Bridges Road is the place to go. Enjoy the incredible views of the Sierra Mountain Range contrasting with the open golden fields of Bishop. Some restrictions do apply to this area, so consult a local sporting goods store for details.
Bishop is the perfect home base for your Eastern Sierra fishing excursion, so if you’re looking for a great fishing getaway blended with some real Western hospitality, look no further than the Creekside Inn. And ater a good day’s fishing you can take a dip in Creekside’s heated outdoor pool.
