death valley superbloom

Flowers are beautiful at any time of year, but the ‘Super Bloom’ in Death Valley National Park takes that beauty to a whole new level.
The spectacular sight of millions of wildflowers blooming along the desert’s hills and badlands is a sight that few people ever get to see.
That’s because a super bloom only happens about once every 10 years. Like most quirks of nature, a super bloom is unpredictable, short-lived and rare, so gazing upon one is the experience of a lifetime.
Here are our top tips on how to see the super bloom…
1. Time your Trip
Peak blooming periods in Death Valley National Park depend upon how ‘high’ you want to go in search of the super bloom. For example, from mid-February to mid-April, you should be searching on the lower elevations and foothills. You could be rewarded with carpets of gravel ghost, bigelow monkeyflower and desert gold. From early-April to early-May, you should be searching in elevations from 3,000 to 5,000 feet. You couls be rewarded with desert paintbrush, indigo bush or desert globemallow. And from early-May until Mid-July you should be searching from 5,000 to 11,000 feet along the mountain slopes. You could be rewarded with inyo lupine, rose sage or purple sage.
2. Check the Weather
How much time you have to seek out these flowers depends heavily upon the weather. Hot days can cut the blooming period short, but wet weather can extend it.
3. Watch your Step
You may want the perfect Instagram or Facebook pic, but watch your step. These flowers are fragile, so make sure you don’t crush them while you seek out social media stardom. And some of the flowers can give you a nasty rash if you get too close to them!
4. Watch the Clock
Different flowers bloom at different times of day, so if you find a good wildflower spot in the morning, return to it later in the day: It may look completely different!
6. Book Early for Blooming Season
Accommodation options can book-up fast during super bloom season. The Creekside Inn in Bishop is a great accommodation option if you’re seeking out the super bloom this spring. Oozing traditional Western charm, the property provides the ultimate escape when you visit Bishop, California.
